“I have been with my boyfriend for around 1 year. In many respects he makes me very happy. He is better looking than me and seems more emotionally intelligent and grounded. I am much more articulate than him and our social groups are very different. Some of my friends are liberal academics and some of his friends are uneducated and racist. I feel embarrassed introducing him to a large proportion of my friends as he doesn’t have the social skills to mix with them. He was bullied at school and like me from a poor background, the bridge between them is too great. He was recently convicted of assaulting an older person which he is adamant he did not do. I believe him on this however I have recently found out that he has a criminal record for petty crimes. In many respects we have a very good relationship but I am concerned about my future if I stay with him. Even if we assume he is innocent with his lack of education/social skills and criminal record I think he will always be poor. I’m not a gold digger, I don’t need to be rich but I don’t want to have a family with someone who cant cover the basics. I don’t want to be the only earner. He runs his own business and it seems to have started well but with everything else I’m just not sure. Being 33 I am worried that the decisions I make now will have rather permanent consequences.
