Everyone is experiencing financial stress. That doesn’t mean you have to let it stress out your relationship. I have found the easiest way to recession-proof your relationship: date without spending one dime! That’s right; continue to date to increase the romance & happiness in your relationship without spending one red cent. Not possible? Read on.
It might be hard to remember if you have been living life high on the hog prior to this economic downturn, but there was a time when you didn’t have the extra money it takes to go out on the town and take in a Broadway play. Or perhaps you enjoyed fine dining at a 5-star restaurant. Remember? What did you do way back when you were a broke college student or working at your entry level job fresh out of high school for a date? Go to the movies or out for one drink? Maybe. Well you don’t even have to spend money on the cost of a movie ticket to recession-proof your relationship.

The telephone ring pierced through the quiet afternoon air. It was Friday, just moments after clearing up the lunch dishes and laying our youngest child down for his nap. The other two children scattered off to play. I settled into my computer chair, S. brought his work clothes up from the dryer. Honestly, I expected them to say there was no work – take the day off, and though we need the money, I was starting to plan how we would spend the sunny afternoon together… go to the park, pick up some groceries and fire up the grill… I was not expecting them to say there was no work – period. Like so many others in recent months, S. was laid off.
Whether it’s your first, second, or 50th date, you want to mix it up as well as make the time you spend together memorable, stimulating, and fun. A “dinner and a movie date” is nice every now and then, but the world has so much to offer beyond that. It doesn’t matter if you are married, engaged, or in a long term relationship, you and your partner should include date nights/days in your schedule.
