7. “Adopt” new parents or role models. Find a couple that exhibits all the qualities you want in your marriage. They say you can’t choose your parents. However there is always an option to spend time and appreciate an older couple who seems to have the winning formula for marriage.
6. Invite your adopted parents over for dinner or help them around the house. (This is good detective work at it’s best) During this time ask them what their secret is for having a long happy marriage. Then as my 67 year old client Steve says, “Shut up and listen.”
5. Jot down your thoughts about what they said. Put stars next to the comments that really strike you as good advice.
4. Make a commitment to do at least one thing they suggested for an entire week. If the husband’s secret to a happy marriage is letting his wife manage the finances and you haven’t done this before, sit down and have a conversation in the near future of how this could work.
3. Take note what the model wife says. If she says keep your promises and be dependable, note in your life where you could be more accountable. Make a commitment to yourself and your partner to be honest and say “No” if you can’t do something. Your “better half” will appreciate your new found lesson.
2. Choose a model couple that works for you. Who says your model couple has to be older? If you have friends or business associates that make you sit up straight and take notice this is even better because they may be at a similar stage in life which is even easier to model.
1. Turn to the media for role models. Go on Google and check out what couples are being featured in the news. Political and celebrity couples are interesting because if they have successful marriages that can withstand the scrutiny of the media then you can use some of these tips at your own pace in the privacy of your own home to create a stronger happier marriage.
