Although gay people were denied the right to legally marry in California, it shouldn’t stop you from wanting to participate in the ideal of marriage and all that it means for the commitment aspect. Asking your partner to marry you can still be a momentous occasion for you both. If you are straight, it should not matter whether the girl or guy pops the question, but if you are traditional and you know your loved one expects the male to ask, then gentlemen, you are on deck! In my book, The Straight Man’s Pocket Guide To Picking Up a Hottie-Written by a Woman Who Loves Women, there are plenty of ideas to get someone and although I include a chapter on how to keep her, forgot to include tips on how to propose.
Regardless of how you propose, you should be sure it is creative and memorable, and most importantly, something your future fiancée will enjoy. No sense proposing to her at a baseball game in front of thousands of fans if she hates baseball!
Check out these ideas and if you are ready for the plunge, just do it:
- Boat/Yacht Excursion-Being out on an ocean, lake, river, etc near sunset can be amazingly romantic. You can pack a nice food basket with wine, chocolate, or any of his/her favorite morsels and after you satisfy his/her pallet, you propose. You can have music or write a little romantic verse or poem to highlight the occasion.
- Adventure/Getaway Excursion-If you both love adventure or getaways, plan a special weekend or holiday and propose to your loved one at a time when you are at the most perfect point or romantic spot. It could be on top of a mountain you have just climbed or sitting on top of a rock over looking the ocean in the Caribbean.
- Youtube It-Create a video of yourself singing, acting or dancing or something your loved one would love to watch you do. Towards the end of the video, propose to them either holding up a sign or looking directly into the camera. Upload it to youtube.com and find a way to watch it with your future fiancée so you can see the look on their face and be with them in person to share the whole experience.
- Romantic Dinner-Cook up a special dish you know your honey loves, including appetizers, salad, main course, and dessert. Create a romantic mood with music, candles, wine, or favorite other beverages and anything else you can come up. Over dessert, pop the question!!!
- Hiding the ring-If you want to make it fun and kooky, there is the “hide the ring” technique. You can hide it in a gift, box of chocolate, bunch of flowers, bottom of a glass of champagne, end of a kite string, etc. Once she/he finds the ring, look them in the eye and propose!!
Final Thoughts. If you know you are ready to pop the question and you are fairly certain your boy/girlfriend will say yes, make a plan to do it. Be creative, thoughtful, fun, and/or wild. Making such a commitment is such an amazing, wonderful thing and we, as humans, are all here for the same thing; to love and be loved.
