Respect is, without doubt, essential to a successful relationship. But long-term compatibility requires something else–admiration. I didn’t know that until I read Hayden Dane’s brief e-book, “I Have One Question” available at http://www.haydendane.com (I don’t know if I’m allowed to give the Web site?). Anyway, Dane makes a very convincing argument that long-term compatibility is dependent on admiration, and he describes a conversation to be had between couples or prospective couples to elicit the information necessary to determine if that admiration exists and your long-term potential for compatibility is high. I’d not considered admiration before, but after reading the brief book, I’m a proponent. Now, I have Dane’s suggested conversation early on, and even if I can respect the other’s thoughts, opinions, and principles, if I don’t give/get promising answers in the course of the conversation, then I conclude that our prospects for long-term compatibility are questionable. Respect-yes; admiration-absolutely.
